Chapter I
Our company story does not begin with a date, but with a young man who, fresh out of university, was faced with a task: finding an affordable work bag. Not quite as easy as it sounds, as our founder Max also discovered when starting his career. An almost impossible task: every product he found was either too expensive or not good enough.
The year is 2007, when the young graduate of FH Aachen starts his first job as an assistant to the management at a large company. What helps you make a professional impression on your new colleagues on your very first day? Max was already certain back then: a representative bag!
Online shops for bags? Back then, they were nowhere to be found. After a long search through Aachen city centre, Max chose a classic black briefcase made of cowhide leather. In the end, however, it left the job faster than he did. The 249€? A lesson learned! And so the story ends - after just 7 months, by the way. For the time being!
Only a few years later, at just 26 years old, the young, motivated and admittedly somewhat naive career starter decided to become self-employed.
This immediately resulted in at least three challenges:

Will this internet thing ever catch on?
2. He is on his own:
Who is supposed to take on all the work anyway? And he does not even have a proper bag anymore!
3. There is not even a coffee machine:
How are you supposed to work overtime here?
Chapter II
Where there are many challenges, creative solutions are needed. Sometimes, however, it is also very simple: Shortly after the first employee, there is also a kettle, instant coffee - and therefore tolerable overtime :)
But one thing at a time: Even in the years after buying his first briefcase, Max had to realize that little had changed in the online landscape. Our experience and insight:
If there are no solutions to a problem, we probably have to tackle it ourselves. The logical step - making contacts! A large leather goods trade fair in Milan is marked with a thick red circle in the calendar. The plan: Build contacts with well-known leather brands and sell their bags online. After initial euphoria, however, disillusionment quickly sets in. Instead of an open-hearted welcome and enthusiasm for a new sales channel, all we receive are rejections.
Whether the well-known leather brands at the time failed to recognize the market or shied away from the direct comparison of quality or price - that will probably remain a secret forever. At this point, without resentment or gloating, we would like to thank everyone who said “no”. Everything that happens, happens for the best!
Because this is exactly when the flash of inspiration comes: Disappointment turns into inspiration. We will simply do it better! And so Max celebrated STILORD’s official birthday on 06.08.2014.
Chapter III
Whether on a wiki or in a business dictionary: there are many smart definitions of a start-up. For us, however, it was like this: Max was still packing the orders himself. The only marketing employee was learning Photoshop in a crash course and was visibly surprised the first time he had a customer on the phone.
If there was a little time left, he also made coffee – after all, we were now the proud owners of a filter coffee machine. New employees, colleagues and friends quickly joined us: support was urgently needed – because things were taking off much better than expected.
The team: young, still wet behind the ears, but eager to test itself, the market and the product.
Chapter IV
And what does it all look like today? After four moves in total: The office is bigger. The warehouse is bigger. So is our thirst for coffee. Just like our processes, our black gold now runs fully automatically!
Even though we now have dedicated teams for support, shipping, marketing, media design and IT, one thing has always remained: our team spirit!
Leather - a gift from nature
Leather is a product rich in tradition, developed and perfected over thousands of years. We are happy and proud to be part of this tradition and to carry this craft responsibly into the modern age.
Leather products are the embodiment of responsible use of natural resources. They came into being a long time ago, long before upcycling and recycling became overused terms. With us, you will find only products made from genuine leather. We pay particular attention to preserving the natural look and character of the material. We are simply convinced: leather is naturally beautiful and only becomes more beautiful over time.
Another outstanding factor is uniqueness. Every piece of leather has its own colour and surface texture. That is why all our leather bags are true one-of-a-kind pieces. Of course, we did not want to withhold this feeling of exclusivity from our customers.
As a start-up based in Germany, we feel responsible for the selection of our international partner companies. We make sure that our production facilities are certified according to SA8000. This certificate is an internationally recognised seal that ensures fair working conditions are maintained. Twice a year, we visit our long-standing partner companies and strengthen the personal relationships that are important to us. Both culturally and professionally, our worldwide partnerships regularly provide us with new inspiration.
Values and promises
1. The design, practicality and durability of our leather bags are our top priorities. Minimalist, timeless elements for us and future generations - this is something close to our hearts!
2. Our products are not created on paper - we love to take inspiration from nature, everyday objects and the whole world. Natural and minimalist products that inspire - that is what we work on every day!
3. The durability of our products reflects the core idea of sustainability. A product that can be used for many years has an excellent CO2 balance and therefore shows responsibility towards the environment.
4. Fair prices are close to our hearts. We remember the original problem that needed to be solved: Max was unable to find a bag that was both affordable and high-quality. Because we sell our products directly to customers without middlemen, fair prices combined with high quality are our top priority. Another benefit we offer our customers is free delivery on every order.
5. With our high-quality and long-lasting products, we want to delight our customers every single day. That is why our dedicated support team is available for any questions or concerns. With every satisfied customer, we come one step closer to our goal.
Sustainability promise
For us, sustainability begins with the selection of materials that are turned into a long-lasting product through timeless design and high-quality workmanship. Fair working conditions, social commitment and comprehensive customer service are just as much a part of STILORD’s sustainability promise.
Our commitment
We believe that each of us can make a big difference, even with small actions. For this reason, we support non-profit organisations such as stem cell research, hospices, animal welfare and much more. We choose these organisations together with our Facebook community by involving them in the selection process. In doing so, we make sure to consider both organisations for children and projects that benefit the environment. In addition, every year we donate to at least one local project directly here in Essen. Last year, the decision fell on the following three organisations:
Stiftung Kinderherz: Through the tree sponsorship in the KinderHerz forest, we contribute to research projects on children’s heart diseases at the Children’s Heart Centre in Aachen. We are especially pleased that this project brings children and nature together.
Kältehilfe des DRK Essen: The volunteer cold-weather aid in Essen helps ensure that people without shelter get through the freezing winter nights warm and safe. We are pleased to support people in need directly here in our home city of Essen through donations.
Save the Children: With a donation to the organisation Save the Children Deutschland e.V., 25 children were provided with school materials, helping to pave their way to education. This improves the future opportunities of some children.
Every year, we look for new projects and non-profit organisations that rely on donations. We want to give our customers the chance to take part in the selection and do something good together. Our mission & vision
As a young company, we naturally never stop learning. We are constantly evolving, with visions, plans and, of course, goals for the future! To inspire our customers around the world with new designs, we work day after day on developing new styles, types of leather and colours.
What we have already successfully started in Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the UK, we now want to bring to the whole world - a confident sense of style and high-quality bags made from genuine leather! Alongside the continuous expansion of our range, our main focus is therefore especially on internationalisation.
Our team
For us, being a start-up means above all: lots of work, lots of team spirit and lots to learn. But just as much a part of it are meatball Tuesday, döner Thursday and shared coffee breaks. We even have our own food coordinator - every Thursday, Max invites everyone to gather around the table.
By now, the amount comes pretty close to the price of Max’s first bag - with the difference that, at least from our point of view, the money is much better invested this time. But who is actually behind the STILORD team?
